Family. Understanding what it means to be part of the family of God is crucial to learning to live the High Way because it changes your relationship with him, setting you apart from those who haven't chosen Jesus.
We are not just creations of God but also His children. Galatians 4:7 (NIV) states, "So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir."
Our identity as God's children means we are heirs to His kingdom. It means we have the privilege and responsibility of living according to the principles of His kingdom. A kingdom that is fundamentally different from the world we know, for God’s kingdom doesn’t have sin in it.
The Deeper Meaning of Being A Child of God
The language and imagery that it creates for your relationship with God were chosen deliberately. It tells a greater story of the intimate and personal connection God intends to have. Unlike a distant "higher power," God becomes a loving Father to you. The familial bond shows you are loved and cherished beyond measure.
In the simplest terms, choosing to accept the truth of Jesus, asking him to help you cut ties with sin, and inviting he Holy Spirit to fill you conveys your decision to step into the family of light, allowing God to give you access to things that can only come through him.
Stereotypical children of God think they just have to be moral people and that's enough. It's a powerless view of faith in Jesus. The plot-twist that can only be understood through relationship with God is that salvation is meant to cleanse, eject, and destroy the work of everything that opposes God's kingdom that has come into your life.
Has someone hurt or abused you? God's ability to pullout the shards or darkness that have broken your heart is a reality more than just a nice idea. This issue is that most of the church has lost their faith in God's ability to heal and transform. Instead of being a powerful and loving Father, we have reduced God to an idea.
What if you were different? As a child of God you chose to stand and believe that the current state of Christianity isn't enough, that it's not the quality of relationship you know a loving Father would want.
Power and quality of Christian lives don't track the with history of family of God. If we merely copy the current trend of faith, there is little to no inheritance being accepted. Dead faith needs to fall from the Body of Christ, allowing us to break free of darkness and shine the light of Christ out into the world.
God Story:
For some reason since I was young I have had powerful moments with God. I did share the experiences with people, but I knew they were real because of the peace I felt after they happened.
What do I mean? When I was 16, I used to cruise around in my car by myself quite a bit. I listened to Alanis Morsett and other angsty artists that told me as was powerful through being a b....
I didn't typically wear my seatbelt. One night as I was driving by the local golf course I felt the urgency to put on my seatbelt. In doing so, I must have slowed down a bit. (My car didn't have cruise control.) Just as the belt clicked two dear popped out in front of me. I slammed on the breaks and my seatbelt held me in place. I barely missed them. Sitting at a dead stop, I thanked God for the heads up. I just knew it was him.
I have a lot of God stories from my teen years. You would think I surrendered and did things God's way, but I didn't I did more the typical Sunday powerful Christianity thing through my 20s. Never really grasping fully onto faith, but instead continuing to live the way I wanted avoiding any kind of accountability or conviction.
The cost was high. My mental health was tangled up. My heart was walled off and hardened. People would comment...you never cry. I thought that was a good thing, but in reality, I couldn't feel my emotions because of the way I was living. I was a slave to sin and I had no clue what I was missing out on.
The Shift to a Higher Way of Thinking
The Secret to Being Set Free
For those of us that choose Jesus though we mess up and sin, we can break free of the entanglement of sin through the law of the Spirit. We have to do the work to learn how. Otherwise the enemy will take advantage of the fact that you aren't using the power God has given.
It frustrates me to see believers living in terrible bondage because as a child of God they have the power to be set free. It's a matter of learning how.
