Day 1: Journal Pgs. 42&43
Context: Romans 8:7-8 "For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God."
Question: Make a T-chart. On one side write Spirit on the other side write flesh. Write out things you learned about each one from Romans 8:5-8.
peace and eternal life. This is a foretaste of life everlasting. (Biblehub.org)
Question: Where do you see Life in the Flesh in the real world? How does it affection the people who participate?
Question: Why is it challenging to live Life in the Spirit? What can we do to make a positive change?
Day 2: Journal Pg. 44
Commentary: Ellicott's Commentary says, "Dwell in you.—This expression is the complement of the other “to be in the Spirit,” “to be in Christ.” It denotes the closest possible contact and influence of spirit upon spirit." (Biblehub.org)
Thought: The Carnal Mind puts it's desires above God. Feeling angered and put off by what God would ask them to submit or surrender. Flesh will not allow life to be under the authority of God's law, which moves the boundaries God set up in order to justify behavior. This leads to chaos like genders being fluid, humans identifying as animals, or deviant sexual behavior.
Question: If the Spirit of Christ lives in believers to sanctify our hearts and to help us accomplish his work, then what do you think it implies if we don't desire to live in the Spirit?
Barnes' Notes on the Bible: "He may be loud in his professions, amiable in his temper, bold in his zeal, or active in promoting the interests of his own party or denomination in the church; but if he has not the temper of the Saviour, and does not manifest his Spirit, it is as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal." (Biblehub.org)
Day 3: Journal Pg. 45
Thought: Jesus died in our place to allow us to be set free from sin and punishment, in exchange we have abundant life. Satan came to keep us from or steal what Christ did for us.
Strong's Concordance: Abundant Life: (syn. more, greater, excessive, exceedingly), Implies a superior, surpassing, uncommon life. (Biblehub.org)
Question: Contrast the thief's motives for your life versus Jesus' plans for your life.
Question: How does it benefit you to understand Satan's motives?
Day 4: Journal Pg. 46
Thought: In the Old Testament those who believed in God could show outward signs to God that they wanted to die to sin, but they didn't have the power to do it. When Adam sinned it transferred him under the authority and headship of Satan, which became humanity's legacy. It wasn't until Christ that an opportunity existed to pass from the family of Satan to the Family of God.
Die to Sin: Represented in that we were buried with him.
Sin- failure, not hitting the target, missing the mark, not empowered by God, doing wrong. (Biblehub.org)
Together it can mean divine closure to not being empowered by God in your life leading to newness of life.
Question: How did your perspective change on this verse and baptism after studying what it meant to die to sin?
Day 5: Journal Pg. 47
Commentary: Matthew Henry's Commentary says that a renewed person acts upon kingdom principles and rules to the end believers are changed in character and conduct. The person who formerly had no relationship with the Savior, now loves him above all things. An unregenerated heart is offended or hostile toward God. A reconciled heart lived in peace with God through the redemption Christ accomplished on the cross. (Biblehub.org)
Question: When should you expect to become a new creation?
Thought: The change seems to begin in the heart, which then flows out to bring about becoming anew. The newness comes out of connecting to the divine power of God. It is not something we can produce for ourselves, yet we must partner with him in order for it to happen. He will not do it to us or for us.
Question: Explain how it could be possible for someone to be baptized, go to church, and know all the church language, yet they don't become a new creation.
